Comments on blog is clear indication of content and popularity of your blog. Ideally when you write a post, your reader should drop by in comment section and interact with others.
If you have started blogging recently and yet to have good number of comments on your blog, here are few tips to increase comments on your blog. I will say that these tips are very common but often missed or overlooked.
Get Google PR for your blog, first
If you are a serious webmaster, I am sure that you will be aware of link building game. No one is interested in building inbound link for their blogs from a low ranked website.
Hence first of all, try to get a good rank in terms of Google PR, Alexa ranking and Complete rank. Once you are having a high rank blog, people will automatically tend to comment on your blog to get benefitted from high rank of your blog.
Use Plugins to Attract Comments
If you are on WordPress, several plugins are available to attract comments. Some famous ones are:- CommentLuv, KeywordLuv, Top Commentators, etc.
All these plugins enable your blog to give backlinks to them who comments on your blog. CommentLuv can link to latest post (or one of latest 10) whereas KeywordLuv is having capabilities to provide link on Key word which are used by commentators in name field.
Make your blog Dofollow
Unless you make your blog ‘Dofollow’, very few will be interested in getting a backlink from your website. Everyone know that nofollow links keep very low value in the eyes of search engine (particularly with Google). So making such nofollow links doesn’t create much value for someone who makes comments on your blog. Natually if you have NoFollow blog, people will avoid you.
Acknowledge Comments
When someone make a comment to your blog, get some time from your busy schedule to reply to them. It creates a personal bonding and visitors tend to interact more with you and other readers. If feasible try to acknowledge each comments. Say at least few words to thank them and call them by their name to make bonding.
Do visit to your fellow bloggers and in return, comments on their blog too.
Giveaway for Commenting
Last but not the least, arrange a periodic giveaway on your blog for commenting.
Above mentioned 1st four methods to increase comments on your blog works only when someone intend to get a link. But what about those who doesn’t run a blog/website and don’t have any interested in getting a link from your blog.
For them (and for everyone), the best way to attract them and keep them engaged, is to arrange a monthly (or quarterly) giveaway. This way, even common man will have something to get from your blog.
I hope by following these tips, you will be able to increase number of comments on your blog.

Good comments in popular websites bring a lot of viewers to the site. So, it is better to say some words in comments rather than just ‘nice post’ and ‘Written well!’

Christopher
I’d say I am thrilled to read comments especially those that delve on a specific item I discussed. And I wouldn’t care if the comment (er) disagrees or supports my topic as long as the discussion is valid enough. Either way, there is a relationship established, don’t you think?
well said, Amy. Show must go on… doesn’t really matter is your readers keep the same view as that of you. You should be keep discussing and thats the only way to reach at a common point/view.

The problem with making a blog dofollow and having commentluv enabled is that it is more likely to be attacked by spammers. If it wasn’t for spammers, we all would be enjoying a happy dofollow blog community thing.
